ZTE U988S spotted at AnTuTu, could be the world’s first Tegra 4-powered smartphone

As rumors of Snapdragon 800-based devices grow in intensity and number by the day, reports concerning possible gadgets with Nvidia’s Tegra 4 chipset inside seem to be oddly quieting down. Still, the first phone running on Tegra 4 might have been spotted mere hours ago.

Manufactured by ZTE and codenamed U988S, this thing has been apparently benchmarked in AnTuTu, scoring a healthy 29,784 points. Healthy, but not record-breaking, since we’ve just seen Sony’s soon to be unveiled Xperia ZU score a little over 32,000 points.

The ZU is said to run on a Snapdragon 800 CPU clocked at 2.2 GHz, so we’re starting to understand why there was so little hype surrounding the Tegra 4 platform. Also, these newly uncovered benchmarks go to show us all the OEMs that have partnered with Qualcomm instead of going the Nvidia way for their 2013 flagships made the right call.

At the same time though, it’s not like that 2,300 points gap between this ZTE phone and the Xperia ZU is colossal. Plus, we’re likely dealing with pre-release prototypes here and there’s no way to know which one is closer to see daylight and which of the two ran the more “refined” software when tested.

Furthermore, the Tegra 4-powered Shield handheld console was seen scoring 32,000+ points a while ago, so we should probably wait a little while longer until conclusively ruling the Snapdragon 800 is zippier than Nvidia’s latest chip.

But enough about that and let’s focus a little on the ZTE U988S. Aside from packing a 1.8 GHz Tegra 4 chip, we also know the thing runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (for now, at least).

As for the rest of the specs, chances are they’ve been revealed close to two months ago. A ZTE phone with an uncannily similar codename (N988) was making the rumor rounds then, allegedly sporting a 5.7-inch 720p display, 2 GB of RAM, 13 MP rear snapper and 2 MP front cam. But is the U988S the same phone as the N988? Only time will tell.
