A day before Google’s new Daydream View VR headset goes on sale, Google has listed its new YouTube VR app on the Play Store. The app will only work on Daydream View, which means that only owners of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones will be able to enjoy YouTube in VR.
The YouTube VR app basically turns every video on the platform into a virtual reality experience by reimagining YouTube as a 3D world that you can explore from the inside. You will be able to view every single video available on the platform, including 3D 360-degree videos as well as “standard rectangular videos”. All videos will be viewable on a virtual big screen in the specially designed “theater mode”. Another exciting feature of the app is spatial audio, where depth and distance play a role depending on where you look.
The app will give you a full, signed-in experience, which means you can view all your subscriptions, playlists, watch history, and more. To browse through or search videos easily, you can switch between voice and keyboard controls. There is also the option of watching a video and browsing at the same time.
Unfortunately, most of you will not be able to enjoy the app as apart from the latest Google smartphones, no other current device supports the Google Daydream platform. That said, Google may decide to make the YouTube VR app available for some other handsets in the future. If you own a Google Pixel or Pixel XL, do head over to the Play Store and give the app a try.
