Xiaomi working on dream laptop with unreal pricing

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, famous for their heavily skinned MI Android powered smartphones are rumored to be working on their own laptops.

From a successful start-up as a phone manufacturer to developing their own Android set top box, Xiaomi is now rumored to be developing a laptop to follow up their recent successes in mobile products.

According to the rumors, Xiaomi is working on their very own 15.6 inch notebook that may open some eyes. Here's a quick look at the specifications:

  • Intel Core i7 CPU
  • nVidia GT660M GPU
  • 8 GB Of RAM
  • 15.6 Inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) Display

Xiaomi's W.I.P. laptop does pack really powerful specifications. The most exciting part about the rumored Xiaomi laptop isn't the 1080p display or loads of RAM, but rather the OS, and more importantly the skinning that it will run atop. Xiaomi's in house MIUI skin is one of the most beautiful and desired custom Android skins. If you have a fairly popular phone, chances are that you will find a custom ROM packing Xiaomi's MIUI skin for your device.

GizChina reports that the Xiaomi laptop will run Linux OS with a modified version of MIUI, designed for laptops of course. It will be interesting to see how Xiaomi takes their skin and creates a big screen realization of the same. However, it still leaves us wondering as to why Xiaomi would pack a powerful GT660M GPU if they intend to run Linux OS.

There are more reasons to be happy about this device as a Chinese listing gives a rather attractive pricing of 3999 Yuan, which translates to $650. We find that rather hard to believe as the Core i7 processor from Intel would alone make up for about half the BOM (Bill of Materials) for the product, add to that the cost of a 1080p display and a mid range nVidia GPU. $799 sounds like a more realistic price if you ask me, if Xiaomi intends to sell the product at a profit. GizChina reports an August launch for the laptop.
