Windows RT 8.1 update pulled due to boot issues on some devices

Nothing ever seems to go right when it comes to Windows RT. A serious hitch has affected the rollout of the Windows RT 8.1 update for Microsoft’s ARM-based tablet operating system.

The update was made available to Windows RT users on Saturday, October 19th, but was pulled on the same day – the reason is reportedly a blue screen error that some users are experiencing during the boot process post-update, which is to say the update is bricking devices and making them completely unusable.

Here is Microsoft’s official statement on its community website:

Windows RT 8.1. Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available.

Well, here’s hoping the update becomes available within a week or two, though you can take things into your own hands by following these instructions on creating a USB recovery disk to get the Windows 8.1 update to resume and complete without any further issues (your data won’t be wiped).
