WhatsApp to drop support for BlackBerry and Nokia devices, among others

WhatsApp has announced that it will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger for a couple of old and outdated mobile platforms by the end of 2016. Well, not just old – WhatsApp support will also be ceased for BlackBerry 10.

The news comes after the seventh anniversary of the world’s most popular messaging client for mobile devices and also after it went free for all operating systems. The Facebook-owned company is citing a focus on popular operating systems to expand the app’s feature set. Support will be ended for BlackBerry and Nokia S40 and Symbian devices, Windows Phone 7.1, and all Android versions except Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

There’s still a lot of time before users of these platforms will be unable to use the app, and the move to end support for these platforms shouldn’t come as a surprise. BlackBerry is unlikely to be happy about BlackBerry 10 being on the list, even though it looks like the Canadian company will be using Android in the future.
