What’s Nex? The Bezel-less Vivo Apex Concept Comes To Life

Incredibly futuristic, the Vivo Apex had captured the attention and imagination of everyone, when they unveiled it in an event in China earlier in March.

Just three months later, Vivo has fleshed out this bezel-less beauty, and it’s everything we imagined. Called the Vivo Nex, It has the defining features of the Vivo Apex concept, while borrowing heavily on the proof of concept characteristics they put on the Vivo X21 which was released just last month.

The Nex has the Vivo Apex’s retractable front-facing cameras. This allows the phone to achieve a 91.24% screen-to-body ratio. Vivo says that there still is a ‘chin’ at the base of the phone, although the company maintains that the phone “fulfills the bezel-less dream”.

The proximity sensor and front-facing speaker is also effectively hidden. It utilizes “screen soundcasting technology” to transmit the call audio through the glass.

The Vivo Nex also has the rounded edges and the on-screen fingerprint sensor we saw on the Vivo Apex, though the effective area has decreased slightly at the expense of speed improvements. To be fair, it was reasonably fast on the Vivo X21 as we found out during our review.

Intended to be the brand’s flagship, the Nex features some of the best components available on the market. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor at its heart, it also sports 8GB RAM with 256GB of storage. The display is an impressive 6.59-inch 1080p+ OLED display. To power it all is an impressive 4,000mAh battery. Lower-specced (and more affordable) models will be made available in due course.

Its primary rear camera is a 12-megapixel f1.8 shooter, with a secondary 5-megapixel f2.4. The pop-up front-facing camera is 8 megapixels and f/2.0. Oh, and there’s a headphone jack.

However, at 199g and 7.98mm, the Nex is slightly heftier and thicker than most of its 2018 compatriots. Despite this, it’s still slightly sleeker in the hand than the Apex concept.

At RMB4,998 (SGD1,042), the Nex might just prove to be a good option for those looking for a great performing flagship that looks great and feels great.

While Apex was (much) better as to size and appearance, the nex is the best phone right now. I hope that OP6t will use the same concept and get rid of the hateful notch
