Western Digital releases mega-sized 6 TB hard disk

NAS and consumer desktop versions of the drive available for $299 and $279.

Western Digital released Monday a 6-terabyte hard disk.

WD’s 6 TB drive comes in two versions: Red, with more error correction features, designed for enterprise customers and Green which is intended for consumer desktops. The Red version of the drive ships for $299 while its green counterpart retails for $279.

“With the expansion and evolution of the WD Red family, WD once again is providing its loyal customers with increased capacity up to 6 TB; improved bay count support with up to 8 bays; increased product breadth with WD Red Pro; and more features with the latest generation of NASware technology,” said Matt Rutledge, senior vice president and general manager, WD Storage Technology, in a statement. “WD continues to listen to its customers and bring exciting innovation to the category they helped to create.”

The new WD Red drives come with a three-year warranty while the WD Red Pro will come with a five-year warranty.

This release comes just days after WD announced during an earnings call that it was shipping samples of an 8 TB drive to select enterprise customers for testing.
