The UE Boom’s bigger brother, the UE MEGABOOM is a rock-solid 360-degree powerhouse that isn’t to be trifled with. This bass-heavy speaker is probably all you need for your next pool party, but at S$399, it’s a rather pricey boombox.
The jumbo-sized speaker is 83mm in diameter and 223mm in height. It’s rather heavy at 833g, but it’s without a doubt, worth its weight.
The device is pretty much a huge UE BOOM, sporting the same cylindrical pill-like design. It’s covered entirely in rubber and cloth, to give it a sporty appearance. It comes in a variety of colour combinations, all of which are vibrant and youthful, which hipsters would love.
On the rubber stem at the front is the volume control buttons. The top and bottom of the cylinder holds the power + bluetooth button and the USB + auxiliary ports.
This rubbery giant is waterproof, with a rating that allows it to be immersed in waters with depth of up to 1 metre for a duration of 30 consecutive minutes. If you drop this bad boy in Cold Water whilst listening to Bieber, you have nothing to worry about.
Without a doubt, the UE MEGABOOM is one incredibly loud boombox. Its maximum volume is mindblowing, being able to hit twice the volume of the original Boom. Hence, if you are headed out for an outdoor party, the MEGABOOM would be one of your top choices.
The bass is the highlight of the MEGABOOM , it’s incredibly impactful and punchy. There is a solid 3D feel towards the bass. The mids and highs are well-balanced and there is no drop in quality across the spectrums as it goes to the treble, but the highs are noticeably weaker than the mids. The vocals are clear and crisp, playing Bastille’s “What Would You Do” really brought out the resonance in the lead singer’s voice.
The only issue is the slight distortion when the volume gets cranked up to the maximum. It is not extremely obvious, but for those with more sensitive ears, you will notice its presence.
Nevertheless, the MEGABOOM delivers an outstanding audio experience.
The UE MEGABOOM has great connectivity, pairing immediately with my smartphone when I hit the bluetooth button and even across a wall, the MEGABOOM was still playing. Unhindered and unblocked you can go as far as 30m before the connection gets cut off, which is pretty decent.
Without a doubt, the battery life on the UE MEGABOOM is its strongest selling point. This portable speaker can go up to 20 hours, blasting music continuously without ever resting. It then only requires around 2.5 hours to charge up, which is pretty good for lazy folks like me.
The UE MEGABOOM is a great outdoor speaker for those who love devices capable of handling loud volumes and heavy basses. It’s long battery life is of course something most users would learn to appreciate as well. The only issue is the slightly heavier weight of the UE MEGABOOM and its toned-down trebles.
