THL’s upcoming Monkey King phone to come with 13 MP front camera, because why not?

THL is a small China-based smartphone manufacturer that most of you didn’t know existed until five seconds ago. Am I right so far? I think I am. And I also think I’m right in saying THL will get its 15 minutes of fame starting… now.

THL Monkey King

Sadly (for them), we’re literally talking about 15 minutes here. I give you the W11, also known as Monkey King (no, really), the company’s next flagship device. What’s so special about this ruler of the apes? Just one thing – it features a 13 MP camera… on its front. Plus a 13 MP rear shooter.

The rear camera packing a 13 MP sensor is definitely no special feature, so let’s focus on that crazy-sounding front snapper. Who would ever need a camera like that? No one, or at least no one in their right minds, since 2 or 3 MP is enough for some decent self-portraits or video calls.

Heck, if you want a little something extra to get your duckface just right, Oppo’s Ulike 2 has a 5 MP front cam. But 13 MP? That’s just a waste of money!

So why is THL so keen on spending dough which would have been better used elsewhere? Simple, it’s that 15 minutes of fame I told you about earlier. It’s unorthodox and not very wise, but when no one knows your name, you have to pull a stunt like this to get some media attention. Think Umeox and all the other OEMs looking to snatch the “world’s thinnest” crown.

The irony of it all is, if you look past the pointless front camera, THL’s Monkey King is actually a solid high-end device, with a balanced set of specs. Sure, it’s not a record-breaker in terms of pure speed, as it comes with a quad-core MediaTek CPU, but it does sport a 5-inch Full HD screen, plus 2 GB of RAM and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Set to go on sale soon, the 5-incher will likely cost around $350, which is a little steep by Chinese standards. I wonder what the price would be if the front cam were a run-of-the-mill 2 MP unit. Oh, well, we’ll never know, will we?
