Tests show 2013 Nexus 7 is much more durable than iPad mini

When Google launched the updated Nexus 7 (some add ‘2013’ after, and others simply calling it the Nexus 7-2), people were quick to begin comparing the new Nexus specs to Apple’s iPad mini.  While processor cores and display quality matters, there’s also the durability thing.  So which one is more durable, the new Nexus or the iPad mini?

Dropping a tablet from about 3-4 feet off the ground to test if the hardware can withstand the impact isn’t really science, but it’s one of the easiest ways to gauge how durable a smartphone or tablet is.  Square Trade, a company that offers warranty packages for electronics, did just that, and their tests have revealed that the new Nexus is more durable than the iPad mini in almost all aspects.

First they did the drop test with the old Nexus, new Nexus and iPad mini, and found that the refreshed Nexus was the only device to not have its screen cracked from the impact.  Second they conducted a slide test, and found that the Nexus didn’t slide around as much as the iPad, which is a given considering the rubbery surfacing of the Nexus’ backside.  Then it was off to the pool (actually, it was just a tub of water) for the water dunk test, and here they found that the second Nexus kept humming along with full capabilities, whereas, the iPad mini lost all audio capabilities, and the old Nexus just kept on rebooting.

These drop and water tests would be much more accurate if there were more samples, but from Square Trade’s limited amount of trials it appears as though Asus did put a lot more attention into durability the second time around.
