The more than respectable LG G Pad F 8.0 has unfortunately been replaced with the uglier, lower-end Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 at the center of the Uncarrier’s now traditional promotion.
How would you like to start the new school year with a completely free of charge Android tablet? No down payment required, no monthly installments, just sales tax and a data service of 1GB+. T-Mobile offered such an unbeatable deal for Father’s Day, and a similar publicity stunt is on from today, August 14.
At the moment, it’s only valid for existing customers of America’s third largest network, with everyone else invited in on the action next Wednesday, August 19. Quantities are obviously limited, so it’s entirely possible the bargain will be nixed soon after. Or perhaps even before outside consumers can get in.
Granted, the Alcatel Pixi 7 that’s about to go from $168 to zero is hardly a glamorous device or what you’d call a powerhouse, but who doesn’t like free gear? There’s a bit of confusion surrounding the entry-level 7 incher’s internals, as T-Mo’s press release previewing the back to school promo says Android 4.4 KitKat runs the software show, and a no doubt laggy dual-core 1.2 GHz chip is in charge of raw speed.
Meanwhile, Android 5.1 Lollipop and a quad 1.2 GHz SoC are highlighted on the product page as the slate’s fortes, alongside a 2 MP front-facing camera, not a crappy VGA unit, like the PR suggests. It’s needless to point out which of the spec sheets we’d rather count on, with 4G LTE connectivity also in the mix, plus 1 GB RAM (hopefully), microSD support and 1,024 x 600 screen resolution.
