Sony’s new dual USB flash drives offer cheap expandable storage for smartphones and tablets

Sony has launched new USB flash disks for mobile devices, aimed at offering cheap expandable storage to Android phones and tablets that don’t have SD card slots.

These disks are unique in that they sport two USB connectors – a micro-USB connector on the front, and a standard USB 2.0 connector on the back. Apart from offering extended storage, these disks are also aimed at making file transfer between Android devices and a PC faster and easier, with support for both Windows and Mac (since these are standard flash drives, any OS should support them.)

“Consumers want to let a friend see the photo they just took or share a video easily with as few steps as possible,” said Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media marketing, Sony Electronics. “These new drives combine convenience, peace of mind and performance and are perfect for mobile multi-tasking.”

The flash disks are compatible with Android devices running Android 4.0.3 and above (Android 4.4 isn’t supported yet but will be in the future)  with support for USB On-The-Go (OTG) connectivity, a requirement that makes them compatible mostly with high-end devices as USB OTG isn’t something you’d usually find on low-end and mid-range phones and tablets. Availability will begin globally in January 2014, with 8, 16 and 32 GB variants priced at $19.99, $29.99, and $62.99 respectively.
