Sony Xperia Z2 (aka Avatar) already making the rumor rounds, 540 ppi screen and 3 GB RAM among specs

As the dust is nowhere near settling on Sony’s Xperia Z1 announcement, most folks not very familiar with how things work in the mobile tech industry would say it’s much, much too early to start speculating on the Z2.

But since the Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors have been kicked into gear even before the Note 3 went official, why wouldn’t Sony also want to start build awareness for what’s to come in 2014? Especially when this Z2 is shaping up to be an even more groundbreaking device than its predecessor.

Cheekily codenamed Avatar, the Xperia Z2 has popped up on the Esato forums (where else?) a few days ago, with several users offering insight based on alleged “inside” sources. The author of a fairly obscure blog has added his own declassified information to the mix, painting a remarkable albeit somewhat confusing picture.

Before going any further, I want to warn you to try to handle all the “intel” with the utmost care and prudency, as there’s no way to verify its credibility just yet. Now, let’s start directly with the kicker.

The Z2 is tipped to sport a 5.2 or 5.5-inch IGZO Triluminos display with, wait for it, 500 or 540 ppi pixel density. Whaaat? Is that even possible? I mean, physically possible? Anything’s possible. And as big as those numbers might seem, they’re actually not that far off HTC One’s ppi, for instance – 469.

The Z1 is itself a beast in this department, clocking in at 441 ppi, so upping that with another hundred sounds like a piece of cake. Well, not quite, but close enough.

Meanwhile, all sources seem to agree Sony’s “next big thing” will pack quad-core Snapdragon 800 power and 3 GB of RAM and see daylight as soon as CES 2014, in January. Too soon? For Z1’s sake (or lack thereof), I for one would say yes, but then again, I’m not in charge of Sony’s mobile business.

To wrap it all up on a happy note, let’s not forget to mention the “Avatar” is rumored to come with a 20.7 MP camera with 4K video recording support in tow, spacious 3,200 (or 3,500) mAh battery and pre-loaded Android 4.4 KitKat. Z1? Who cares about the Z1 anymore?
