Sony Xperia UL unveiled in Japan – a Z with IP58 certification for water protection

Sony has made the recently leaked Xperia UL official in Japan. The 5-incher comes with a Full HD screen, quad-core S4 Pro CPU and IP58 certification for water protection.

Sony’s Xperia smartphone family is and has always been about diversity and choice, but unfortunately confusion seems to be also part of the bargain lately for Xperia buyers. The Z and ZL are in many ways extremely similar devices, while the newly announced ZR does cut a few corners, but remains very close to the high-end niche.

And now there’s a new fellow in town, going by the Xperia UL name. Leaked just a few days ago, the spanking new 5-incher is essentially a water and dust-protected ZL. Or a Z with a slightly tweaked design and better water protection.

Whereas the Xperia Z is IP57 certified and can therefore withstand short “swims” in water between 15 cm and 1 m deep, the UL comes with an IP58 rating, so it can be dunked for a little longer in up to 1.5 m deep water.

Other than that though, the Z, ZL and UL have essentially the same specs, though for a second there we all hoped Sony would be making the Snapdragon 600 leap with this new thing. That’s not the case after all, so the UL is powered by the same “old” S4 Pro CPU clocked at 1.5 GHz, plus 2 gigs of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

As for the 5-inch display, that’s on paper stunning, with a Full HD resolution and 443 ppi pixel density, but unfortunately chances are it’s going to have the same major issues as the panels on the Z and ZL – poor viewing angles, mediocre color reproduction and contrast.

Other features of the UL include a very capable 13 MP rear camera with Exmor RS sensor, 16 GB of on-board storage, microSD support, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE and a 2,300 mAh battery. Unveiled in Japan by KDDI, the country’s number two wireless carrier, the phone is likely to remain exclusive to the network.

There are no words on pricing yet, while shipping is to start on May 25. The Xperia UL will be offered in three differently colored flavors – white, pink and black.
