Sony Xperia 5 (S$1,099) Announced – Smaller, Cheaper Xperia 1

Bringing over top features from their flagship Xperia 1 smartphone (SGD 1,299), Sony has launched the Xperia 5. In a smaller footprint, the Xperia 5 (SGD 1,099) delivers the same cinematic display pedigree, camera performance and audio performance powered by Sony’s ventures in cinema, television and camera technology.

Keeping the same 21:9 CinemaWide display, and clad in Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on front and rear surfaces, the Xperia 5 sports IP65/IP68 rated water resistance. This aspect ratio is perfect for multitasking accessible via Side sense or voice command, or for viewing cinematic content on its 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display.

With Sony’s heritage in television technologies best implemented in its Bravia line of high-end TVs, the X1 for mobile engine brings HDR remastering on the Xperia 5. A Creator mode “powered by CineAlta” ensures precise colour reproduction with 10-bit tonal gradation and deeper blacks. Proprietary image processing supports colour space ITU-R BT.2020 and DCI-P3 with Illuminant D65.

In line with its focus on cinematic content, the Xperia 5 sports Dolby Atmos tuned in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment. Delivering realistic audio with headphones or with built-in stereo speakers, the Xperia 5 also sports Sony’s Hi-Res audio for wired and wireless, along with DSEE HX and Stereo speakers.

Apart from movies, the Xperia 5 also delivers an improved gaming experience with an improved Game enhancer. Allowing users to more seamlessly record gameplay with burst screen capture at 20fps, the Game enhancer also lends greater privacy in multiplayer titles with an in-built voice changer feature.

With its expertise in photography evidenced by the meteoric rise of its Alpha range of cameras, the Xperia 5 sports a triple 12-megapixel camera array with a full-frame equivalent 16mm super-wide-angle, 26mm standard wide-angle and 52mm portrait telephoto lens for versatile shooting.

Accompanied by Bionz X for mobile processing and Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation, the Xperia 5 carries over Eye AF technology for smartphones that debuted on the Xperia 1. It is also capable of 10fps burst shooting with autofocus and auto-exposure tracking and increased calculations at up to 30fps.

Connectivity also takes a step forward with ‘Smart connectivity’ on the Xperia 5. Leveraging Sony’s deep learning engine to analyse Wi-Fi signals, the Xperia 5 is able to predict signal issues and switch to LTE automatically.

Powered with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, the Xperia 5 sports an integrated X24 LTE Modem for gigabit-class LTE – with support for all LTE bands with 4 x 4 MIMO technology ensuring stable connectivity even with weak signal coverage.

A 3140mAh battery is augmented with USB PD fast charging and Smart Stamina intelligent power management for all-day use.

In Blue, Red, Black and Grey, the Xperia 5 will be available with colour matching cases – the Style Cover View and the Style Cover. It ships with Android 9 Pie and will be available from 1 November 2019 at all Sony Stores and the Sony flagship store on Lazada at an RRP of SGD 1,099.
