Japanese electronics giant Sony is reportedly quite serious about starting a manufacturing facility for Xperia smartphones in India.
Sony India Managing Director Kenichiro Hibi told reporters recently that Sony is considering the possibility of manufacturing Xperia smartphones in the country thanks to the Indian government’s new ‘Make in India’ initiative that encourages foreign investment in the manufacturing sector.
Although he hasn’t specified any details yet, he did mention that it could happen within the next two years. Sony had closed its manufacturing facility in India in the year 2004 and began importing its entire product lineup to India from China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan.
Sony expects sales in India to continue growing this year, with an overall growth rate of 20 per cent. Part of that growth is expected to arrive from smaller urban centers in the country.
