Sony Releases Firmware Update For PlayStation 3

Playstation 3 owners, the time has come to hit the downloads once again. Sony has announced the availability of the new v3.42 firmware which it claims contains various patches to address security vulnerabilities found in the system software.

Do you own a Sony PlayStation 3? If so, you might want to hook it up to the internet soon: Sony has just announced that a new firmware update is available for the console, and that the upgrade is supposedly mandatory.

According to a (rather informally worded) blog post by John Koller, Sony Director of Hardware Marketing, v3.42 of the firmware includes additional security features, although he did not mention what the features were.

“Hi everyone! A minor update to your PS3 system is now available via system software update v3.42 that includes additional security features. For more details and instructions on how to update the system software for the PS3 system, please visit the PS3 System Updates page,” he wrote.

Interestingly enough, the v3.42 firmware update, if downloaded directly from Sony’s update page, also includes two previous firmware updates (v3.40 and v3.41). This was probably done to make it more convenient for PlayStation 3 owners who do not hook their console up to the internet to perform a collective upgrade in a single large package.

Of course, not everybody see the v3.42 firmware upgrade in the same light. Ars Technica, in particular, has suggested that the current firmware update was supposedly released as an answer to the current ‘jailbreak’ fiasco that has been surrounding the console. But that is purely speculation.
