After releasing a preview of Android N earlier this year, Google has been continuing work on the next major Android upgrade and has already offered two developer previews for Nexus devices. Today, Sony is joining in on the fun, as the Japanese manufacturer has released an Android N developer preview for the Xperia Z3.
It’s not often that Android device manufacturers let their users test upcoming versions of Android, at least not in the stock unadulterated form. Sony has offered stock Android alternatives for its devices in the past, but this is the first time an upcoming Android iteration is making its way to a non-Nexus device before release. It’s also odd Sony isn’t letting users of its latest flagship, the Xperia Z5, get a taste of Android N, but it’s possible the company will do so in the future.
The Android N developer preview for the Xperia Z3 can be installed using Sony’s official PC companion software. Being a preview, the software is likely to have bugs and also requires a full erase of the device, so those looking to install Android N on their Xperia Z3 would do well to backup all their data. As a refresher, Android N brings features like MultiWindow, improved notifications, and better 3D graphics with the new Vulkan API. It’s expected to carry version number 7.0 and release in final form sometime in the second half of this year.
