Sony might be working on 8-core MediaTek MT6592 based Smartphone

The newly revealed MediaTek MT6592 8-core SoC might have a top-tier OEM name attached to it already. Reports say that Sony is working on its own Smartphone based on the MT6592 chipset.

Sony MEdiaTek MT6592

It was only yesterday that we found out about MediaTek’s 8-core MT6592 chipset, with devices based on the first true octa-core chipset scheduled to hit the market by December 2013. A new report says that Sony is one of the most likely candidates to use the new SoC in a future Xperia Smartphone.

With the Sony Xperia C, the company’s first MediaTek (MT6589 quad-core) chipset based phone launched last week, it is entirely plausible for the company to once again use a MediaTek made chip in their future phone. If Sony does end up using the MT6592, it will become the first top-tier brand in the world to offer an octa-core phone (unlike the hybrid octa-core Galaxy S4).

Leaked AnTuTu benchmarks put the MT6592 scores right with the big leagues. A 30,000 point result comes dangerously close to top end chipsets like the Snapdragon 800, and beating out every other chipset from this generation (such as the Snapdragon 600, Exynos 5 Octa). With no other major ARM SoC to be released in the coming months (except Nvidia Tegra 4, perhaps), MediaTek could easily make a huge jump from their current position in the market into the company selling the 2nd fastest mobile ARM CPU in the world. Phew… That would be something… Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until December to see actual results.
