Sony Announces a6400 Mirrorless Camera with Real-Time Eye AF

Sony had launched the a6400, a 24.2-megapixel mirrorless camera that boasts the world’s fastest autofocus acquisition speed, real-time eye AF and 11 fps continuous shooting with mechanical shutter (8 fps silent shutter with full tracking).

With high-speed shooting combined with AF/AE tracking, the a6400 offers great flexibility with 425 phase-detection and contrast-detection AF points that cover about 84% of the image area.

In addition, the camera packs a wide variety of capabilities into a compact form factor.

This includes 4K (3840 x 1260p) HDR video recording with full pixel readout – ensuring the full surface of the sensor is fully utilised. This allows users to take advantage of the blazing fast autofocus speeds for videography.

The camera also enables for easy time-lapse movie creation with the interval recording between 1-60 seconds with up to 9999 shots. AE tracking sensitivity can be adjusted to three levels to customise changes in exposure throughout the shooting interval.

With the a6400, Sony also marks the first time Hybrid Log-Gamma picture profiles are brought to its APS-C line of mirrorless cameras. The a6400 boasts both S-Log2 and S-Log3 for enhanced colour grading possibilities.

Features built to assist in videography such as zebra focus assistance, Gamma Display white balance and exposure assist, along with proxy recording. 4x or 5x slow-motion recording can be recorded at Full HD with 120fps at 100Mbps, all with full AF tracking.

An articulating tilt-screen touch LCD allows for seamless self-recording, or for added versatility in low and high angles. The 921k-dot 3.0-type LCD doubles with touch functionality to enable uses such as Touch Pad, Touch Focus, Touch Shutter and a new Touch Tracking that allows real-time focus point tracking via the touch screen.

The a6400 features an XGA OLED Tru-finder viewfinder, eight custom keys that can be mapped to 89 functions, and a redesigned menu interface with a new My Dial and My Menu function.

With dust and moisture resistance, the a6400 is built to last out and in with a durable shutter mechanism that is rated to up to 200,000 actuations. Connectivity with smart devices is enabled with a brand new Imaging Edge Mobile application.

The Sony a6400 (ILCE-6400) will be available in Singapore from Mid-February 2019. Pricing is yet to be announced.
