Qualcomm APQ8084 shows up in benchmark, could be Snapdragon 800 successor

An unknown Qualcomm SoC with model number APQ8084 has shown up in a benchmark, and it could be the successor to the company’s mighty Snapdragon 800 (APQ8974) chipset.

Qualcomm hasn’t specifically mentioned anything about an upcoming mobile chip yet, but it would be silly to think they aren’t actually working on one, even though the Snapdragon 800 has as much power as mobile devices could possibly need for the foreseeable future, since faster hardware isn’t something we can get enough of.

However, according to RBMen, the APQ8084 won’t be as major an upgrade as the Snapdragon 800 was over the Snapdragon 600. It will purportedly have the same 2.3GHz processor frequency, but will feature the Adreno 420 GPU clocked at 500MHz, 50MHz higher than the Adreno 330 in the S800. It will support DirectX 11.1, and also include h.265 decoding, which should theoretically allow 1080p video with the same quality as h.264, but at half the size, while also supporting 4k video. Oh, and 64-bit support should be a given as well, despite what Qualcomm might think about the A7 processor in the iPhone 5s.

The benchmark score is pretty similar to the Snapdragon 800 in devices like the Galaxy Note 3, but that will probably change by the time the chip gets finalized. Qualcomm usually announces¬†new chips at either the Consumer Electronics Show in January or Mobile World Congress in February, though we’ll probably see more details leak in the months before the official unveil.
