Samsung will begin producing second-gen 10nm chips later this year

Samsung 10nm

According to a new report from Re/code, Samsung plans to roll out new 14nm and 10nm processes very soon.

Citing Samsung Semiconductor senior director Kelvin Low, the report reveals Samsung expects a second-gen 10nm process to be commissioned later this year. Along with that, Samsung is also planning a new low-cost 14nm process.

The second generation 10nm process, according to Samsung, will bring a 10 percent improvement in performance compared to the first generation. With the new 10nm process, Samsung believes it will once again be the leader by leaving TSMC and Intel behind. Whether or not that translates into greater orders from Apple for its future Ax SoCs remains to be seen. According to latest reports, the Cupertino firm has awarded most orders for the “A10” chip to TSMC.
