Samsung reportedly working on 5.7" and 6.2" Galaxy S8 models

The discontinuation of the Galaxy Note 7 might become a problem for lovers of the Galaxy S series, according to a report from a Korean news outlet. In order to target consumers who like the Galaxy Note series, Samsung has apparently decided to launch the Galaxy S8 in 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch variants, with the latter to be carrying the Plus moniker like the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy S7 edge+ devices. The report also states that Samsung will achieve the increase in screen size without increasing the size of the device itself by opting for a bezel-less design (similar to the Xiaomi Mi Mix) that also eschews the company’s tradition hardware home button.

We have already heard that Samsung is looking to remove the home button from its flagships next year, which would make the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge the last phones to feature the iPhone-like navigation key. With Samsung no longer exclusively making phones with dual curves, a bezel-less design could be the next step the company takes, especially if it helps in bringing in Galaxy Note consumers without making for an unwieldy design for those who like non-phablet smartphones. The curves will remain, with both models to feature Edge displays, something we have heard in previous rumors as well.

Whether Samsung actually makes these drastic changes to its main flagship line remains to be seen. Without offering an S Pen and the productivity features of the Galaxy Note series, the Galaxy S8 wouldn’t really be a true alternative to the Galaxy Note 7 despite a bigger size. But with a few months to go before the Galaxy S8 arrives, all of these reports should be taken with a pinch of salt.
