Samsung announces a Smart Bio-Processor for wearables

Samsung Electronics today announced its first Smart Bio-Processor, an all-in-one advanced system logic chip for health-oriented wearables.

The new Smart Bio-Processor is now in mass production and is claimed to be the most versatile health and fitness monitoring chip available on the market today. The industry-first all-in-one health solution chip integrates Analog Front Ends (AFE) with a microcontroller unit (MCU), power management integrated circuit (PMIC), digital signal processor (DSP), and eFlash memory. This allows the Smart Bio-Processor to process bio-signals without requiring any external processing parts.

The five integrated AFEs – bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), photoplethysmogram (PPG), electrocardiogram (ECG), skin temperature, and galvanic skin response (GSR) help measure body fat, skeletal muscle mass, heart rate, heart rhythm, skin temperature and stress levels.

Samsung expects the chip to show up in fitness/health devices by the first half of next year.
