Samsung announces new activities for world’s first Youth Olympic Games

The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is still a whole month away, but organizers and sponsors are already gearing up to ensure that every Singaporean (or rather, everybody in the world) will not get left out of the action. And Samsung is definitely going to be very busy as well. After all, the global sponsor has a couple of plans in store for the duration of YOG.

The Youth Olympic Games is well on its way to arriving on our shores (in a month’s time, to be precise), and preparations are already well underway to ensure that everybody gets a slice of the action for the duration of the Games. And Samsung, a longtime sponsor and Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games, will be busy with something which it believes will enhance the experience of people interested in the Games.

Up Samsung’s sleeves is a program it calls the Samsung Mobile Explorer, in which 10 students will be selected from Singapore, China and Korea to participate. Under this program, the students will assume the role of reporters and perform their own ‘live’ coverage at areas such the competition grounds, at Culture and Education Program activities and at various venues all over Singapore where YOG celebrations may be taking place.

Of course, they will not be heading into the job unprepared: to ensure that they have the proper tools and equipment needed for the job, each student will receive from Samsung a netbook, a digital camera and a new Galaxy S to assist them in their roles as junior reporters. Along the way, the 10 Samsung Mobile Explorers will detail their coverage, reports and experiences in Samsung’s YOG Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SamsungSingapore, which is expected to be updated daily when the Games start.

Samsung also took this time to reaffirm their commitment to the Olympic Games, stating that the company has always taken a very pro-active stance in sports and believes in nurturing the young as the future of the world and the adaptors of technology.

“Samsung has been a partner of Olympics games since 1988… the Youth Olympics Games is the nineth event the company is participating in and Samsung is passionate about. Youth represent the future of the world and also adapters of technology, and when we get feedback for technology, we get it from the youths,” said Mr. Gregory Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Samsung Asia.

“The products that we make uplift the experience of the sports, allowing people to capture, share and relive remarkable sporting moments. As a capturing and sharing device, we launched the Samsung Galaxy S as the first product in Singapore among other cities in the world,” he said.

Guests also received a welcome surprise at Singapore-born singer and composer JJ Lin’s appeareance in the event, where he was revealed as Samsung’s chosen Youth Ambassador for Singapore 2010.

Mr. Lee praised the singer in his speech, saying that JJ’s qualities such as his “personality, passion, pursuit of excellence and active lifestyle” was representative of the shared values between Samsung’s and the Games, which made him the perfect choice for the position of Ambassador.

JJ Lin, on his part, acknowledged the honor of being appointed and has expressed strong interest in contributing to the success of the Games.

“As a musician and an artist, I think and I believe that music has its own way in the sports zone. I’m looking forward to many events and activities and counting down to 23rd July to the torch bearing as I will be one of the torch bearers for this year’s Youth Olympics,” he said. “I hope to contribute by sharing my experience and the excitement of the Games together with youth around the world.”

Although we cannot help but feel that just his presence alone in the Games is already a major contribution to its success: after all, it is extremely hard to not get interested in anything JJ Lin is involved in. And even more so when he is working in an official capacity.
