S$999 Canon EOS 200D II Announced: 4K, Digital IS, Live View Eye AF

Canon’s latest update to its extensive line of EOS DSLR cameras is a refresh to the entry-level EOS 200D. With a similar compact DSLR form-factor, the Canon EOS 200D II (AKA Rebel SL3) features a deeper grip section, along with a lighter form factor – the lightest in Canon’s line-up at 450g.

Despite its compact size, the EOS 200D II packs the latest DIGIC 8 image processor also used on the EOS R, along with the same 24.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor from its predecessor. Dual pixel autofocus makes a comeback, with extended low-light capability with performance in conditions as low as EV -4. Sensitivity is available from ISO 100 to 25,600 (expandable to 51,200), with improved low-noise performance.

Ease of use

The camera also offers ease-of-use assisted-shooting features with the inclusion of Creative Assist, which helps beginners navigate the settings easily, while offering the ability to store preferred settings for future use.

The form factor of the EOS 200D II also enables intuitive use for a wider variety of situations. The 3-inch 1.04M-dot Vari-angle touch-screen LCD monitor allows for more complex framing, including selfie-taking.

To enhance self-portraits, a new Smooth Skin function optimises colours and tones automatically without the need for extensive, complicated post-processing. The Auto Lighting Optimiser on board allows for nuances in the lighting of multiple scenarios to be best captured without the need for time-consuming tweaking and chimping.

Eye Detection AF (autofocus) optimises the EOS 200D II for portraiture (and self-portraiture) applications, even for moving subjects. For the first time on the EOS 200D II, this convenient and powerful feature comes to Live View, and is also available in movie mode. With a continuous shooting of up to 5fps (3.5fps in Servo AF), the EOS 200D II can keep up with pets, children or even athletes in motion. It retains the same nine autofocus points as its predecessor.

4K ( limited to 24fps, and with a significant crop, like on the EOS M50) now comes to the EOS 200D II, granting greater artistic latitude for budding filmmakers to crop, punch in and edit in post, or create content of with incredible resolution.

Comptible with the Canon Camera Connect app, the Canon EOS 200D II easily connects with your smart devices for seamless post-processing and uploading to social media or cloud storage services with a one-touch Wi-Fi button. The app also enables remote control of settings like shutter speed, self-timing function and focus selection.

Bluetooth low energy (BLE) on the EOS 200D II also enables captured images to be remotely viewed on smart devices, even with the camera stored safely in a bag.

Pricing and availability

The EOS 200D II will be available in Singapore from early May 2019, and in Black, White and Silver finishes.
