The Canon EOS RP is the company’s smallest, lightest full-frame EOS camera, coming to Singapore and available for pre-order immediately at a very competitive price (body-only) of SGD 1,999. Pre-order bundle promotional prices are available at the end of the article.
Building on the success of the EOS R, with its superior dual pixel autofocus technology and Digic 8 image processor, the Canon EOS RP packs a 26.2-megapixel sensor in an ultra-light body at 485g, and is smaller than its predecessor in all dimensions.
Where the 30.3-megapixel EOS R could be likened to the Canon EOS 5D Mk IV, the smaller, lighter, cheaper EOS RP is more reminiscent of the Canon EOS 6D Mk II.
It is impossible to ignore the fact that the three largest drawbacks of the EOS R remain largely unaddressed. The thumb-operated touch-sensitive “slider bar” on the back of the EOS R is now gone, replaced with… nothing. The single SD card slot, along with the heavy 1.6x crop in 4K video shooting also remain unchanged. However, 140g lighter and S$1,000 under the EOS R, these drawbacks seem a lot more tolerable.
The RP will be compatible with Canon’s rapidly growing lineup of RF lenses, and with its huge existing family of EF and EF-S lenses with an optional mount adapter.
With 4,779 selectable autofocus points covering almost the whole frame (100% vertically, 88% horizontally), the Dual Pixel CMOS AF on board the Canon EOS RP boasts a rapid autofocus speed of 0.05 seconds (same as the EOS R).
Continuous shooting tops out at 5fps, which would be a limitation to sports and action photographers.
With a native ISO range of 100-40,000, its sensitivity can be boosted to 50-102,400, the EOS RP is capable of performing well in low-light conditions – Canon claiming accurate autofocus even in candlelit situations of up to -5EV.
Dual Sensing IS using a gyroscopic sensor and the CMOS sensor provides up to five steps of image stabilisation to boost performance in dimly-lit scenes. The EOS RP still lacks in-body stabilisation, but makes up for it with Combination IS that facilitates better communication between the RF mount, sensor and lens.
Eye Detection AF works also in Servo AF mode and in Movie shooting, ensuring sharp focus even when shooting wide open. This feature works perfectly with Silent Mode shooting in important events like weddings, ensuring photographers capture genuine and raw emotions without intruding unnecessarily.
With 4K shooting at 24/25fps, the EOS RP still keeps the heavy 1.6x crop factor. However, several other features make it ideal for videography, with aperture adjustments available in 1/3-stops, and manual focus peaking for accurate focussing. Touch & Drag AF enables smooth pull-focus effects seamlessly with a responsive LCD touchscreen.
Still fully articulating as on the EOS R, the 3.0-inch, 1.04 million-dot LCD display on the EOS RP can be angled for vlogging and for ergonomic handling in a wider variety of usage cases. The bright 2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) provides 100% coverage.
Owing to its smaller form factor, the EOS RP can be used with the optional Extension Grip EG-E1 that extends the grip for larger hands. It attaches easily with a large tripod screw, while maintaining access to the battery, card slots and tripod mount.
The EOS RP can also be charged directly via USB-C 2.0 with the optional USB Power Adapter PD-E1, or have its batteries externally charged with the included charger.
New and upcoming RF-mount lenses
A new slate of lenses have also been announced alongside the EOS RP, with a large variety of L-series top-tier options.
The RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM is a fast lens that is suited for a wide variety of uses like landscape and wedding photography. It is slated for availability by September 2019.
The RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the second in the L tier of “trinity” lenses, set to be the all-rounder of the three. It is slated for availability by September 2019.
The RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM brings great reach to the EOS R family of full-frame mirrorless cameras, with a wide f2.8 aperture and image stabilisation on board bringing a native option for mirrorless shooters keen on sports, wedding and wildlife photography. Its slated availability date is TBA.
Portrait photographers will be thrilled at the upcoming RF85mm f/1.2L USM. With its maximum aperture of f/1.2, the L-series medium telephoto prime lens boasts edge-to-edge sharpness even when shot wide open. It is slated for availability in June 2019.
The RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS adds Defocus Smoothing (DS) effects with a new coating technology, improving bokeh quality with unprecedented softer and smoother rendering. Its planned availability date is TBA.
The RF24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM provides a large zoom rage of around 10x in a compact and lightweight form-factor, and is perfect for both stills and videography. It is slated for availability by September 2019.
