Rumors of LTE-A support for iPhone 5S fueled by Deutsche Telekom announcement

A couple of months ago it was rumored that the next generation iPhone might have LTE-A support. A new announcement from Germany’s Deutsche Telekom has fueled the rumors of LTE-A support for iPhone 5S.

Deutsche Telekom announced today that it has switched on its LTE-Advanced network. The network has immediately gone line in more than 100 cities and towns in Germany. LTE-A theoretically offers maximum mobile data transfer speeds of up to 150Mbps, much more than the average 4G LTE connection. Obviously the speed depends upon a number of factors, but LTE-A is without a doubt the next step forward for mobile carriers. Carriers in the U.S. are expected to light up their own LTE-A networks by the end of this year.

It was rumored a couple of months ago that Apple was in talks with South Korea’s SK Telecom to launch LTE-A compatible iPhone 5S in the country. SK Telecom launch its LTE-A network earlier this year. The faster, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 powered LTE-A Galaxy S4 became the first device in South Korea to be compatible with the network. Deutsche Telekom’s announcement reveals that Samsung will be offering an upgraded Galaxy S4 in Germany which will be compatible with the new network. The carrier says that compatible devices from other vendors will “follow at the end of September.”

The last bit is what’s fueling speculation. Apple is expected to launch the next generation iPhone towards the end of September, therefore many are betting that it may have LTE-A support. However, the company doesn’t usually integrate new cellular technologies in its products before they have widespread adoption, so one can’t really be sure that the next iPhone will be compatible with LTE-A. We’ll finally know for sure on September 10, when Apple makes the official announcement
