The very first Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 benchmark has leaked today, and the results aren’t as impressive as you may have expected.
In the leaked GeekBench benchmark, the Snapdragon 820 MSM8996 chipset managed to score 1732 in the single-core test and 4970 in the multi-core test. In comparison, the Samsung Exynos 7420 scores around 1486 in the single-core test and 5284 in the multi-core test. While the Snapdragon 820 manages to score higher in the single-core test, it manages to perform worse than the Exynos 7420 in the important multi-core test.
The Snapdragon 820 SoC is expected to feature Qualcomm’s custom 64-bit Kryo cores, clocked at a high 3.0 GHz. Samsung is said to be manufacturing the chip using the 14nm FinFET process.
While these are only early benchmarks, it remains to be seen if Qualcomm can really optimize the chipset well enough to not just outperform Samsung’s Exynos 7420 chip but also minimize the severe throttling and overheating issues that plague the Snapdragon 810.
