Qualcomm has decided to rename its recently unveiled Snapdragon 618 and Snapdragon 620 chipsets to Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 652.
Qualcomm believes the renaming will help these two chipsets to be better differentiated from the rest of the new Snapdragon 600 lineup, including the Snapdragon 615, 616, and 617. The Snapdragon 618 and 620 feature an integrated X8 LTE Cat.7 modem with carrier aggregation support and are based on the next-generation ARM Cortex-A72 CPU architecture and the next-gen Adreno 510 GPU. These features help the two SoCs to stand out from the rest of the Snapdragon 600 lineup.
While Qualcomm’s reasoning for the name change does make sense, we do feel that the same could have been done before the company actually announced these new SoCs officially.
