Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS is a Phone Full of Horsepower

At an event at Porsche Centre Singapore, in a showroom full of Porsche cars, Huawei and Porsche hosted the local launch of the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS. A result of the ongoing collaboration between Porsche Design and Huawei, the Mate RS squeezes all the latest cutting-edge technology from the P20 Pro, and much, much more into a body more reminiscent of Huawei’s Mate series phones.

The headline feature of the new phone has got to be an on-screen fingerprint sensor. At a time when most smartphone manufacturers still have their fingerprint sensors on the back of the phone, Huawei has managed to squeeze a fingerprint sensor under the 6-inch OLED screen on the front of the phone. They have kept the fingerprint sensor at the back as well, allowing you to unlock the phone using whichever sensor is more convenient.

The Mate RS has 3 cameras and a fingerprint sensor down the centre, much like other phones in Huawei’s Mate series.

Huawei as also retained their award winning 3-camera setup from the P20 Pro. The main camera setup features a 40MP colour sensor complemented by a 20MP black and white sensor, which harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to create one high-resolution image sharper and clearer than what a single camera can produce. Additionally, there is an 8MP sensor with a 3x optical zoom lens, allowing you to get closer to your subject without losing any image quality. Unlike the P20 Pro, the Mate RS has 3 cameras in line with the fingerprint sensor down the middle, like other phones in the Mate series

The bottom features a single USB-C port and no headphone jack. The Mate RS supports Huawei’s Supercharge standard for charging up to 58% in 30 minutes.

Under the hood, the phone carries Huawei’s latest in-house Hisilicon Kirin 970 processor, which is optimised for AI processing, such as the ones carried out by Huawei’s camera app. The local version of the phone has 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, more than enough to store thousands of photos and music, and much more than sufficient for day-to-day use. The 6-inch AMOLED screen at the front has a 2880×1440 resolution, higher than the 1080p on the P20 Pro. The phone is also IP67-certified, meaning it can withstand submersion in water up to 1m for 90 minutes.

The Mate RS Porsche Design will be available at selected stores from 26th May onwards, for a price of SGD2,298. It comes with a beautiful Porsche Design leather case, as well as a complimentary Huawei wireless quick charger worth SGD298.
