The newly released 3DS duo Pokémon X and Y have gained momentum since their global launch on Oct. 12, with both titles garnering critical acclaim throughout the gaming community. The games represent the first-ever global launch within the iconic franchise, and Nintendo has revealed some dazzling sales reports that proves the series is still very much alive and thriving.

According to Nintendo, both games sold over 4 million copies in the first two days of their simultaneous worldwide launch, giving the platform–and the Japanese gaming giant–a much-needed boost before the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 roll out next month.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had the following to say about the profound sales:

“The early response to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokémon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself.”

The current sales trends of X and Y put the duo at a 70 percent lead over the previously released RPG’s in the series Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2. Nintendo additionally reports that the franchise as a whole has sold more than 245 million units worldwide, citing the data in the following table:

Title Platform     Total Global Sales
Pokémon Diamond & Pearl DS 17.63 Million
Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire GBA 16.22 Million
Pokémon Black &White DS 15.42 Million
Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver     DS 12.67 Million
Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen GBA 12 Million

When combining and comparing the regional data from previous launches, Nintendo goes on to report that Pokémon X and Y “would be the fastest-selling Nintendo 3DS games of all time”.

The games reflect the first-ever Pokémon adventure on the 3DS handheld, incorporating a host of new features including a fresh continent known as Kaios, exploration of the new Lumiose City, new Pokémon including the ridable grass-type Pokémon Gogoat and a variety of additional content to provide hours of entertainment.

Based on the trends of the current sales figures, it will be interesting to see how many copies of the popular duo is sold over say a month’s time. Nintendo has always been able to re-capture the magic of established franchises, and since these new Pokémon adventures offer a distinct on-the-go gaming experience, the series will most likely always be thriving.
