Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 has crossed the 50 million sales mark as of this week. The last milestone was 40 million in May, and sales momentum for the PS4 picked up during last month’s sale season, with Sony calling it “the best ever Black Friday week” ever for the PlayStation brand.
The sales include the original PS4, PS4 Slim, and the new PS4 Pro. Sony has also racked up a massive amount of software sales, which stand at 369.6 million as of last week. Meanwhile, latest industry figures put the Xbox One install base at around 29 million. Microsoft’s console has gained momentum in recent months, but Sony carved out an unassailable lead during the first few quarters of the PS4’s availability.
To continue the strong showing of the PS4, Sony has announced that it will reintroduce last month’s sale, which sees the Uncharted 4 PS4 bundle available for $249. The deal kicks off from December 11, and is valid through December 24. The bundle includes the “slimmer PS4 model with a 500 GB hard drive, a DualShock 4 controller, and the critically acclaimed Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The new cooperative and solo mode, Uncharted 4: Survival, launches this month.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO Andrew House commented on the recent milestone:
We’re truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago. With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware such as the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR. We will continue to provide the best gaming experiences available through our ground-breaking software lineup and network services, as we focus on accelerating our business and expanding the PS4 ecosystem.
The PS4 is getting a slew of heavily anticipated titles for the holiday season that include the likes of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Final Fantasy XV, and more.
