A few weeks ago Google announced what the next version of Android will be called. Previous speculations were that Key Lime Pie would be the dessert of choice this time around but the myth was debunked. The next version is now officially called Android 4.4 KitKat. For whatever reason Google found going with a branded chocolate made more sense. What people are interested in knowing however is the list of changes that we can expect to see in this new release.

The pictures above show a leaked built of Android 4.4 KitKat running on the current Nexus 4. Unfortunately it’s tough to spot the changes just from a few pictures. That being said, if we look closely a few UI modifications from Android 4.3 are rather evident. The icons, especially the messaging and dialler ones are different from Android 4.3. Google seems to be going with a more flat look, something we’re seeing adopted more and more.

The dialler app itself has been altered. It now follows a new colour scheme with a huge dial button at the bottom. The biggest, yet the toughest to spot UI change we noticed is the notification/status bar at the top. If we look closely we can see that it changes colour depending on which app is opened. We have seen iOS 7 adopt a similar UI philosophy and Google seems to be going with a similar approach.

The Android 4.4 KitKat build shown above was compiled on August 30 this year.
