Hot on the heels of the launch of the Oppo R15 and the incredibly futuristic Find X, the Chinese mobile giant has unveiled the R17. This phone is slated to be the first to feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6, along with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 chip. Along with its unique notch, the Oppo R17 will also feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen.
Available in Twilight Blue and Neon Purple (translated from Mandarin), the Oppo R17 will feature 8GB of RAM, along with 128GB of storage. With a huge 6.4-inch FHD+ display, the display is clad in Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass, which has been claimed to add drop resistance. Also a debut for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 chipset, the Oppo R17 will boast eight Kyro 360 cores, along with Adreno 615 graphics. The chipset is slated to be the gold standard amongst mid-tier entrants in the mobile market.
The Snapdragon 670 chip will also enable AI capabilities similar to that found on the flagship Snapdragon 845, which will be a boost to its twin 16MP + 5MP rear shooters. Oppo, true to its legacy as a phone for selfies, reserves the best for yourself. A single 25MP f2.0 selfie camera faces front, ensuring your selfies are top-notch.
VOOC fast charging on board also promises to deliver two hours of use from just five minutes of charging for its decently-sized 3,500mAh battery. We can also expect the phone to be shod in Oppo’s divisive ColorOS UI.
With its swift follow-up to its launch of the groundbreaking flagship Find X, Oppo is positioning itself as a formidable figure in the global mobile market. Swiftly securing several world-firsts in the span of weeks, and at different market segments, Oppo has proven its capability both in innovation, and also in design and marketing.
The bold (notch) design and unique colour schemes belie the Oppo R17’s all-new Gorilla Glass display, along with its new-fangled innards. Its pricing and availability has yet to be announced – we’ll just have to wait and see if this phone makes headway outside of its predominantly Chinese market.
