Nvidia GTX 760 to be the last GeForce 700 series GPU for 2013

Looks like the GTX 700 series journey will come to an abrupt stop after the launch of the mid-range GTX 760, scheduled for June 25th.

With the 2013 GeForce refresh far from complete, a new report from WCCF Tech suggests that Nvida won’t release any other GeForce 700 series GPU after the launch of the GTX 760. A quick recap, up until now, Nvidia has launched three SKUs in the GTX 700 family. While the GTX 780 flagship is a derivative of the GK110 die (GTX Titan), the GTX 770 is a rebrand of the GTX 680 flagship (GK104 die) with faster clock speeds and faster, 7.0 Gbps memory. In 2013, instead of replacing the GTX 660 Ti and GTX 660 models with corresponding GTX 700 SKUs, Nvidia will release only one card dubbed the GTX 760.

The Nvidia GTX 760, detailed in our previous report, is said to pack 1152 CUDA cores, 96 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 2 GB of GDDR5 VRAM (6.0 Gbps chips cost cutting). According to our estimates, the performance of this card might be close to or just fall short of the GTX 670, but with a far more attractive sub-$300 price tag.

Coming back to the main topic, the reason why Nvidia might be skipping lower end GPUs like the GTX 750, GT 740 and other such SKUS could be the lack of competition in that range from AMD. The company can simply cut prices of the older GTX 660 and GTX 650 cards to make them accessible to people with lower budgets. As of now, that is the inference drawn from the leaked image. If AMD decides to step up the game, expect Nvidia to launch a counter product as soon as possible.

With AMD gearing up to launch the Radeon HD 8000 series based on an all new 20nm manufacturing technology, the 2H of 2013 only gets more and more heated up with excitement.
