In a recent developer session, Sony’s PlayStation cheif Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the company has no plans for a PlayStation Vita sequel as the ‘climate is not healthy’ for gaming handhelds anymore.
Yoshida believes modern smartphones have made gaming handhelds redundant. While he does hope that portable gaming doesn’t die, he does warn that Sony will not release a PlayStation Vita sequel. Since everyone has a smartphone and can play free games on it, he believes not many would be interested in spending money on a gaming handheld and then pay for the games.
While Yoshida may blame the market for the decision, it cannot be denied that Sony could have done a lot more to push the Vita than it actually did. Despite the huge potential, PlayStation Vita sales were much lower than expected.
