Nexus 8 may be in the works along with a Google smartwatch

It looks like Google will ditch the 7-inch Nexus series in favor of the Nexus 8. A Google smartwatch is also on the cards, with a launch set for June.

Google might be considering ending the Nexus 7 series and instead start offering an 8-inch Nexus 8. An insider source from Google’s Dublin offices in conversation with AndroidGuys revealed that Google will launch the Nexus 8 in July, and that the search giant would no longer manufacture a 7-inch tablet. This is said to be due to the intense competition in this field. The 8-inch segment is far less contested, and currently features tablets like the Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and LG’s G Pad 8.3.

The insider source also stated that the next major version of Android, Android 4.5, will not be announced at this year’s Google I/O, but at the launch of the Nexus 8. Google is said to focus more on services at I/O 2014, which will be held on June 25 and 26.

Rumors of an 8-inch tablet surfaced last year, with LG claimed to be the manufacturer of the tablet. However, Taiwanese sources claimed that Asus would more likely be the go-to manufacturer for the tablet, considering that it makes the Nexus 7.

In addition to the Nexus 8, Google is also said to be working on a smartwatch. Initial rumors suggested a March release for the wearable device, but that date has likely been extended to June. According to sources familiar with the matter, early iterations of the smartwatch featured a metallic wrist band, but Google is said to be inclining toward a plastic band for the final version. The watch is said to feature a full-color display, Bluetooth LE connectivity and a gesture based interaction system.

Earlier rumors also suggested that the watch would show “Google Now” alerts that include weather information, traffic alerts, reminders, event notifications and more. Work on the watch is said to be led by a team of Android designers. Samsung has already unveiled its next-generation Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo earlier today that feature Tizen in lieu of Android. HTC, Asus and LG are also said to be working on wearable devices that will debut later this year.
