Even though they have faced significant negative feedback from gamers and industry peers, Oculus is still pursuing exclusive titles. This time, a new game is in the works for the headset from the company Force Field VR. The Amsterdam-based company is developing in their words a, “big budget AAA exclusive,” which will likely release by the end of the year. However, Force Field VR is not writing off future releases on other platforms just yet.
Playing to Force Field VR’s strengths
The announcement came at 2016 Develop: Brighton conference, held yesterday 12 July, reports Upload VR. Creative Director Martin de Ronde was the one to confirm that they were working on the project, but did not discuss many details other than teasing the title. The focus of his talk was on the opportunities posed by VR as a whole rather than announcing the game.
However, given the history of Force Field VR it is possible to make educated guesses on what the game will be like. Previously called Vanguard Games, the company developed the mobile titles Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo:Spartan Strike for Microsoft. After their restructuring to focus just on AR and VR, it is highly likely that their next project will be a top-down action game.
The upcoming game will be an exclusive to the Oculus Rift, but Force Field are not planning to remain tied to the company. They have a slew of other projects in the works. Future releases are likely to be released on the HTC Vive or Playstation VR. Alongside their game development, Force Field are working on more practical applications. A partnership with space travel company Xcor for example will lead to a VR experience to train astronauts for space.
