Netflix, one of the world’s leading subscription-based streaming services, has abruptly dropped Apple AirPlay compatibility on its iOS applications for iPhone and iPad.
This means that users are unable to cast media from the app onto Apple TVs or AirPlay-enabled TVs and speakers, inhibiting the user experience to a great degree.

On Netflix’s help page on its official website, “technical limitations” are cited as the reason behind this unexpected move. At present, Netflix can still be screened wirelessly on a TV through iOS via Google’s Chromecast, or through its 2nd Screen feature.
The AirPlay icon is also nowhere to be seen on the iOS application, with the Cast the only available option.
This unexpected move comes in light of the recently-unveiled Apple TV Plus, which competes in the same subscription-based market, will feature Apple original productions across Apple’s ecosystem of devices. The platform, together with the app, is expected to be available in May in more than 100 countries, and will also allow shows and movies from Apple’s partners like HBO to be streamed in-app.
