Mozilla introduces new Boot to Gecko mobile OS

A new mobile OS called "Boot to Gecko" has been unveiled by Mozilla at this week's Mobile World Congress, which claims to not only bring a similar user experience, but will also be 10 times more affordable than the current breed of high end smartphones like the Apple iPhone.

Mozilla is known for their free Firefox web browser from the PC to mobile devices. And it looks like the software company could be going after Android with the introduction of a new open-source mobile operating system, Boot to Gecko (B2G). B2G claims to offer similar user experience like other smartphones, but best of all, it will bring down the cost of a smartphone; reportedly 10 times cheaper than the iPhone.

Mozilla is pushing web applications using web standards and enouraging developers to create applications that will work on any HTML5-enabled devices. The company has also introduced the Mozilla Marketplace for developers to submit the web apps, and for users to get them. In addition, Mozilla is also promoting new web APIs that allow web applications  to direct access to various services including phone dialing, SMS messages, cameras, GPS, USB, and Bluetooth.

At the Mobile World Congress 2012, Spanish telecommunications provider Telefónica has announced that it would work with Mozilla to develop smartphones based on the Boot to Gecko platform with price that is comparable to feature phones.
