Microsoft to launch Surface Mini for $299, says analyst

Analyst suggests that Microsoft will launch a mini version of their not-so-popular Surface tablet in the coming months. The so-called Surface Mini will go up against the likes of the iPad Mini and will be priced at an affordable $299.

We all know by now that Microsoft is going to launch a 7-inch (or 8-inch) Surface Mini tablet, no analyst need tell us that (The analyst in question is Topology analyst Maxwell Chang). After the endless reports blaring about Microsoft’s shift of focus to smaller sized tablets (took them long enough) seeing the success of products like the iPad Mini and the Nexus 7 and the launch of the world’s first 8-inch Windows tablet (by Acer), we are only waiting to see Microsoft officially announce a 7-inch Surface Mini tablet.

Looks like 2013 is the year of the ‘Mini’ products eh? With ‘Mini’ versions of flagship Smartphones, the trend is now catching up at Microsoft, but is the company too late? Google showed the world what 7-inch tablets could really do in the market if you make a powerful device that is sold at an affordable price. Apple followed with their own iPad Mini, albeit at a higher price tag (of course). And now, nearly a year later, Microsoft hopes to enter the small-sized tablet market and make a dent. Well, if the hardware is powerful enough (Intel Atom Saltwell) and the price is set right, which according to the analyst should be just $299, then the speculated Surface Mini can definitely hold its own against the onslaught of 2nd generation 7-inch and 8-inch tablets from the Android (Nexus) and iOS (iPad Mini) stables.

With tablet shipments on the rise year over year consecutively¬†(an estimated 161 million in 2013, up from 113 million in 2012), it looks like Microsoft’s big jump into a small (screen)¬†sized segment isn’t too late after all. We eagerly await for the Surface Mini, bring on full Windows 8.1 Pro experience on a 7 to 8-inch display.
