LG Chem has announced a new hexagon-shaped battery that is claimed to improve battery life on smartwatches by up to 25%.
LG is the first to market with hexagonal batteries for smartwatches. It has developed the new battery in cooperation with a leading technology company. The hexagonal battery reportedly helps improve storage capacity by a significant 25% when compared to the rectangular batteries that are currently used on smartwatches and other wearables.
The company claims the new battery will allow smartwatches to offer four additional hours of usage. This is definitely quite significant and will help address the poor battery life that most smartwatches offer.
LG now plans to promote ‘Free Form Batteries’ using its ‘Stack and Folding’ technology. Among the various different shapes that the company has in mind are an L-shaped battery and a rectangular model that will have a hole in the middle. By the year 2018, LG aims to become the world’s largest supplier of small-sized batteries.
