LG to show off 55 and 65-inch 4K TVs at CES 2013

For many people, a “full HDTV” means a display that supports a 1920×1080 resolution, but in the coming months companies like LG, Samsung, and Sharp will be pushing for displays that will make that brand spanking new big screen of yours look like a kid’s toy.  LG will be unveiling several ‘modest’ 4K displays at CES in Vegas, which range from 55 to 65-inch; and for the sake of viability, these ‘smaller’ 4K LG displays will be more affordable.

The 84-inch 84LM9600 4K behemoth that LG recently launched sports a resolution of 3840×2160—that’s 4X more overall pixels compared to the standard 1920×1080.  Four times the pixel doesn’t equate to four times the price of an average (or even high end for that matter) 1080p display however.  Rather, the price tag of the 84LM9600 is marked for a blowout low of just $19,999.

If you’re not willing to drop several months of income for LG’s 84-inch 4K TV, then perhaps the 55 and 65-inch models will be much more affordable—although… LG has yet to confirm the price point of those models.

There’s really no arguing the fact that a $19,999 TV is not something that “mainstreamers” like you and I are looking into purchasing in the next few months.  However, we’ll be at CES 2013, so hopefully LG will provide us with some more details about the smaller 4K TVs—we mainly want to see if an average Joe will be able to afford one in the next couple years or months.

In addition to the unveiling of the 55 and 65-inchers at CES, LG will also be bringing out its 30-inch 4K-by-2K (4096×2160) display for show and tell.  This 4096×2160 display, LG claims, is the highest-resolution computer monitor to date.
