Lenovo intros super-slim 5-inch Vibe X smartphone, 7-inch IdeaTab S5000 tablet

Lenovo kicked off IFA 2013 way ahead of schedule by introducing the world to a heap of new ThinkPad laptops on Tuesday, but you didn’t really think that was it for the OEM and the Berlin expo, did you?

If you did, you were totally wrongo, as a skinny 5-inch phone and 7-inch tablet have just seen daylight. The first of the two is called Vibe X and, right off the bat, we have to tell you Lenovo doesn’t plan to sell it in the US or Europe.

In Asia however, it’s bound to land sometime in October starting with China, albeit no pricing details are known at the time. Thus, what you see is what you get with the Vibe X. But don’t fret too much (if you live in Asia), because this looks amazeballs on the outside.

It’s elegant, robust, sleek and, most of all, a featherweight. It only weighs in at 121 grams and measures 6.9 mm in thickness. And all the while sporting a top-notch 5-inch Full HD IPS screen. Other aces up the fellow’s sleeve include 2 GB of RAM, 13 MP rear snapper and a 5 MP front cam (brace yourselves, the duckfaces are coming).

On the not so cheerful side of things, the Vibe X packs a mediocre quad-core 1.5 GHz MediaTek CPU, only 16 GB of on-board storage (no microSD slot either) and a skimpy 2,000 mAh battery. Oh, well, at least you get pre-loaded Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Meanwhile, the IdeaTab S5000 slate is due to land in Asia as well as the old continent and America by the end of the year, for prices starting at roughly $200. For that dough, you can imagine you don’t get a lot, but the 7-incher is definitely a looker.

Just like with the Vibe X, the tab’s number one strong point is its slender body, measuring an uber-narrow 7.9 mm in thickness and tipping the scales at 246 grams. Too bad the specs don’t rise to the occasion, including but a couple of sweet things (Android 4.2, 5 MP/1.6 MP cameras) and plenty of bitter parts (3,450 mAh battery, 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1,280 x 800 pix res panel). Good effort, Lenovo, but we expected more.
