Kingston has started selling its new UV400 series 2.5” SATA solid state drives, which are basically “ultra value” drives aimed at mainstream users.
The UV400 series drives utilize a Marvell 88SS1074 four-channel controller and TLC NAND flash. Kingston claims the drives achieve maximum sequential read speeds of up to 550 MB/s and write speeds of up to 500 MB/s. As you would expect, performance does depend on the capacity of the drive you choose. While almost all drives in the series achieve more or less identical read speeds, write speeds do differ significantly. The 120GB drive for instance, only achieves maximum write speeds of up to 350 MB/s. It is the same story when it comes to random write speeds as well, with the 120GB drive achieving 15,000 IOPS and the 960GB drive hitting 50,000 IOPS. Random 4k read speeds go up to 90,000 IOPS on all models.
The drives are available in four capacities – 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB. All four come backed by a limited three-year warranty.
