‘Killzone: Shadow Fall’ is going to make your internet connection cry

The Playstation 4 version of Killzone: Shadow Fall is said to require a massive download that may top 50 GB, according to Sony UK boss Fergal Gara.

For better or for worse, the next generation of consoles are making a noticeable push towards digital distribution. In the same vein, Sony will be offering up the Playstation 4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall as a day 1 download on the Playstation Network. However, users with slower internet connections might want to stick with the Blu-Ray version of the game.

In an interview with Eurogamer today, the head honcho of Sony’s UK division, Fergal Gara, revealed that the latest from developer Guerrilla Games will weigh in at just around the 50GB mark. Even in today’s times of almost ubiquitous internet availability, such a massive download seems like overkill. Gara seems to realize that himself, and he says that Sony is continuing to focus on its digital distribution model to make life easier for customers.

One of the ways Sony hopes to offset the pain of downloading such massive files is the new ‘Play as you Download’ functionality. The feature will allow you to start playing a downloadable title when a part of is has been downloaded, while the remaining portion downloads in the background.

“It [downloading large files] is still a relatively tedious process. We’ve done a lot of work on pre-delivering files,” said Gara to Eurogamer. “It’s not perfect. It’s not seamless. But it’s a major area of focus. It’s a major area of investment. It’s going to be for no lack of investment, for no lack of effort and no lack of intention that things might fall a bit short. But we’re definitely moving in the right direction.”
