iPad mini casing leak shows no rear camera hole

A recent supposed leak of Apple's budget iPad mini slate shows that it may not come with a rear camera built-in.

The rumor is that Apple will make an announcement on September 12, and although we don’t know for sure what type of announcements it’ll be, there are good reasons to believe that it will have something to do with the new iPhone 5 and the iPad mini.  Before the announcement, however, there is a supposed leak of the iPad mini’s casing.  What’s especially interesting about these images are that there seems to be no camera hole, meaning the iPad mini may not come with a rear camera.

The casing was found via the Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo, and of course no one knows for sure whether or not the casing in the pictures is legitimate.  For the time being, we can only speculate that the casing is either fake—made by some third party, or that Apple is still prototyping the design of its upcoming 7.X-inch tablet.

Apple is known for making changes to its products at the last minute, so it’s not out of the question that the iPad mini may come with a rear camera.  The smaller iPad mini is supposed to be Apple’s budget slate, and the exclusion of a rear camera may help to cut down production cost.

It also makes sense that the iPad mini doesn’t come with a camera since Apple can monetize on a camera accessory rather than having the camera built-in.  September 12 is just around the corner, and we’ll know soon enough whether or not iPad mini buyers will have a rear camera.
