iOS Facebook app updated with new ‘Gifts’ feature

Today, Facebook rolled out version 5.1 of their popular iPhone application. This update includes several new features, such as messaging updates, and the integration of Facebook's new 'Gift' feature, which allows users to send real gifts to their friends using Facebook.

Two months ago, it was announced that Facebook was rolling out “Facebook Gifts”, a new feature which would allow users to purchase and send gifts to each other. That feature did launch, but has so far been available only in the Facebook desktop application.

Today, with Facebook's 5.1 release of their iOS application, the feature has integrated so that users of iOS Facebook in the United States can now send each other gifts on the go, from their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad/iPad mini.

Besides this, some other features were included in the update, such as:

  • The ability to share multiple photos quickly

  • The ability to see who is active when sending messages

  • A favorites list for most frequently messaged friends, to make them more quickly accessible.

  • A left swipe gesture, allowing a user to immediately see what friends are available and to send them messages.

The convenience of the new Gift feature is obvious to anybody who knows the kinds of trouble shopping can present, and the impact it can have on a crowded schedule. The ability to send a gift right from one's mobile device is an alluring possibility.

The feature could, in all likelihood, see a significant increase in use with the approach of the U.S holiday season.
