Intel says it is testing Skylake Core M processors in smartphones

Intel

Intel today revealed during its IFA 2015 press conference that it is currently testing the 6th Gen Skylake Core M processors in smartphones.

Now, before you get excited, it doesn’t quite mean that smartphones with Core M processors will be available anytime soon. While Intel may be testing Core M chips in smartphones, it could take a long time until the company can come up with Core M processor that is optimized to run on battery and deal with the lack of cooling and the limited thermal headroom.

Intel is slowly starting to pay more attention to the mobile chipset business and is expected to come up with flagship-grade SoCs by next year.

While we don’t expect to see a Core M powered smartphone anytime soon, it is likely that we could see a Windows 10 tablet powered by a Core M chip soon.
